Anatomy, Biomechanics and Posture Review (ABP) – 15 hours
This course reviews the structures (bones, muscles, joints, etc.) that form the support of
the human body. An emphasis will be placed on “ideal” posture and “ideal” biomechanics
of each joint while helping students learn how to detect abnormalities both statically and
dynamically. Open to all personal trainers, this course is invaluable in helping you provide
lasting results for your clients and increase your marketability.
Fitness professionals and/or candidates who have taken the equivalent of the ABP course, whether at the college level or as part of another certification, may be able to “test out”, and thus be exempt from the ABP course. However, we HIGHLY recommend that even those who have placed out of the ABP course audit the course free of charge so that they have a better understanding of the PAI perspective on biomechanics and posture.
This course is CEC Approved.

PAI – COURSE REQUIREMENTS
The Pilates Academy International and Mobile Fitness and Pilates Studio upholds course requirements commensurate with other Pilates teachers training programs around the world. In the chart below, prospective students will find the hours required of them both in the classroom and out, as observation, personal practice and practice teaching are all necessary components of becoming a successful Pilates instructor.
Observation, Practice Teaching and Personal Study Hours
A PAI manual will be provided for every course. ABP requires an additional text which the student is responsible for obtaining: “Trail Guide to the Body” Fifth Edition by Andrew Biel. Students should dress in exercise clothing and wear socks, as they will be performing the exercises as they learn them. There will be breaks during course hours.
The student watches a class, private session, or videos. Taking class is not considered observation.
The student practices teaching the exercises on another person. PAI students may practice at Mobile Fitness and Pilates for free for 3 months after the last day of the course, bringing in one practice body total. Practice hours MUST be during OFF CLASS SCHEDULED HOURS. Students must book times at the front desk – short notice cancellations may occur due to private bookings or courses.
Personal Study Hours:
The student studies the exercises on their own, studying design, breath patterns and muscles involved. Taking class can be considered as personal study hours.
These suggested hours are to be logged and completed before taking the certification test. The logs are turned in on the day of the test. Full hours will be given out during training time.
PAI has a crossover program available for students who have already begun their studies with another program and wish to train with Pilates Academy International. Students must contact the New York location for crossover information.

CERTIFICATION EXAMS AND FEES
The Pilates Academy International, as a registered school of the PMA, has the ability to issue an assessment-based certificate based on the practical and written exams administered. Certificates are issued upon successful completion and assessment of each component of the Pilates repertoire, on each piece of equipment. The Pilates Method Alliance is a fully accredited certification organization for Pilates, INDEPENDENT of any education program. Students may only sit for the PMA exam after successful completion of ALL components of a Pilates Teacher Training program, including all programs on advanced curricula as well as post-rehabilitation protocols. The benefit of acquiring assessment-based certificates as Pilates instructors proceed to full certification are the following: ability to start teaching immediately once the certificate is issued, ability to attain liability insurance upon proving proof of the certificate and ability to sit for the full PMA certification exam once ALL certificates have been acquired.
The student has one year from the last day of each course to take the certification exam. If the student takes longer than a year, a review hour must be scheduled with Fiona Hermanutz at the rate of $78.75hr. This hour serves to ensure the student is on track with studying and the information hasn’t been lost throughout the year.
Exams for every All Populations l course includes a written and practical portion, All Populations ll includes only a Practical. A score of at least 80% is required to pass the written. The practical is graded as pass/fail.
The first exam consisting of ABP and the student’s first All Populations l course Exam is $225. All following exams or retakes are $50 per course.
You must take your exam within 1 year of completing your last course, but six months is recommended.
You may take the exam for any course that you have completed.
Both the written and practical exams can be conducted at Mobile Fitness and Pilates Studio or at PAI Headquarters, Pilates on Fifth in NYC, or at any other satellite-training center. The exam must be scheduled through that facility. Exam fees may slightly vary at each location. The written and practical is typically conducted on the same day. The maximum amount of time between the written and practical is 7 (seven) days.
PRACTICAL EXAM GUIDELINES
Students will be given the format of the practical exam during the course, and thus will be familiar with what is expected during the practical exam. The goal of the practical exam is to test BOTH exercise choice (programming) AND the way the exercises are taught, including cueing, correcting, modifications, and “what to watch out for”. While for the most part, the student will be choosing the exercises, the Teacher Trainer may ask the student to teach a specific exercise or series of exercises. Students will be working one on one with a Teacher Trainer during the exam. There will be no “body”.
Be VERY familiar with the following:
Dominant spinal motion in each exercise
Prime mobilizers in each exercise
Prime stabilizers in each exercise
Proper execution of each exercise
Modifications of each exercise
What to watch out for in each exercise
Our goal is for you to PASS… and with flying colors, at that!
PRACTICAL EXAMS WILL BE BOOKED AS FOLLOWS
One apparatus: up to 30 minutes
Two apparati: up to 45 minutes
Three +apparati: 1 hour
ONCE YOU HAVE PASSED ONE PRACTICAL OR WRITTEN EXAM, YOU DO NOT NEED TO RE-TEST ON THAT APPARATUS!
Adherence to the guidelines that NOCA has set for examinations, an objectively based, written exam must be passed for a certificate of achievement to be issued.

MAKE UP HOURS
It is required that students attend every day of training. If a student has a conflict that cannot be resolved and must miss training hours, the student must notify Mobile Fitness and Pilates Studio prior to the course. Make up hours must be scheduled with a certifying instructor at $78.75hour. (Note that 3 hours of missed group training does not necessarily equal 3 make up hours as a student is often able to go through material faster in a one-on-one setting. The number of review hours will be decided upon by the certifying instructor and the PAI directors).
